August 9, 2003 - permalink It's not that I haven't been writing. I've just been writing on other sites. I've even been to see Lyle Lovette up at Wolf Trap week before last. This past Wednesday, I got the opportunity to work until 9:30 pm. Whee! Taking a Walk Around the FanWhen it's not raining, I like to walk out to Strawberry Street and back. I get to see the construction on the new dining hall at VCU. If I walk all the way up Laurel, I can even see what's playing at the Landmark Theater. A couple of weeks ago, the religious comedy, Madea's Class Reunion was on the billboards. Today, it was a ladies-only show by the Bodysnatchers [NOT work safe], exotic male dancers from DC! The sign outside of the Strawberry Street Vineyards had this Frank Zappa quote - You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer. I miss Frank. Blueberry and Prune BurgersThis time of year, I enjoy covering my bowl of cereal with fresh blueberries at breakfast. However, scientists in Maine are creating fruit burgers. One experiment is a blueberry burger made with dried blueberries mixed into the meat. The other variation is a prune burger. Apparently, the goal is to add moisture to the leaner beef now being raised. On a related note, if you're buying fresh peaches this summer, be sure to put them in fridge once they're ripe. All the rain has made them prone to spoiling if you leave them out too long. Yippee, I've become Garrison Keillor. Hodie!I was doing some reading this weekend about saints and found out about St. Expeditus – the saint invoked against procrastination. Since his name does mean “speedy” in Latin, there is some debate as to whether or not he actually existed. He is usually pictured holding a cross with the word “Hodie” [today] on it while trodding on a crow uttering the word “Cras” [tomorrow]. Aside from battling procrastination, Expeditus is the patron of computer programmers and quick solutions, a particularly useful saint for yours truly this coming week. |
