April 29, 2003 I was coming home from work a little before nine tonight and heard WCVE playing Chet Baker's "Let's Get Lost." So maybe it wasn't that long a day (I did make a stop at the grocery store to pick up dinner), but I sure needed to hear that. Manor HouseI've whiled away the last two nights watching Manor House on PBS. The six hour mini-series has a 21st century family living upstairs in an Edwardian mansion while fourteen other volunteers cook their food, clean their rooms and empty their chamber pots. Heather Havrilevsky's review on Salon is pretty much spot-on; while the show hits many of the same notes as other "reality" television shows, it does reveal some interesting points about how people adapt to Edwardian life. Havrilevsky even posits that there's an S & M undercurrent to the show, but her reviews have gotten a little saucy recently. Where's that woman's mind gone? Who's counting?I went back and looked at the archive - I've written for thirty out of fifty-two weeks. Sure, 60% would be a failing grade in high school, but .600 would be a hell of a batting average. |
