Pictures

Large Image 75kYesterday evening after dinner, I saw a couple in a red convertible stop in the street in front of my house. The woman pulled out a camera with a huge lens and took a picture of the flag outside of my house. Not wanting to feel excluded, I took a picture of my house as well[75k].

Today, I caved and bought the PenCam. I don't need it, but it sure is handy. Also, given its size, its a little easier to carry around for candid shots than my Canon. I played with it all the way home from the store, even taking some pictures as I drove down Cary Street [98k].

I've taken the day off and my dates are all screwed up this. I started logging this under the date the milk I drank expired (which is in the future, thank you).

Elvis Costello at Wolftrap (June 16)

Mike reminded me a month ago that Elvis Costello was playing at Wolftrap. Two years ago, we saw Costello play with Steve Nieve – it was a semi-acoustic show, with Costello breaking out the electric for "Watching the Detectives" and a couple of other rockers. Last night, he played with "The Impostors" – who are Steve Nieve and Bruce Thomas from the original line-up of the Attractions and Davey Faragher on Bass. It was a nice contrast to see Costello with a full rock band behind him. They pounded out several classics as well as some less well-known older tunes such as "Clubland" and "Clowntime Is Over." As I expected, he played quite a few cuts from his new album, When I Was Cruel – about a half of the set. I don't have the latest album yet, but the songs from the show definitely piqued my interest. Overall, it was a good show. I only had one small complaint-the encores. The songs were great; the audience stood through the performances of "Pump It Up", "Radio Radio" and "Peace, Love and Understanding". However, when you do a 13 song set and three encores with 10 more songs total, they're not really encores – they're a second set. I can forgive Costello a slight rockstar pose, as long as he keeps rocking as hard.

Mayhem

On the way up to the concert, Mike and I stopped at a gas station in Thornburg. They had the a small store inside with some merchandise outside. The "sidewalk sale" seemed to be a invitation to mayhem – a table full of fireworks and a stack of water melons below a sign reading "Free Kittens." Fireworks, watermelon and kittens – that just spells trouble.
