Baby Bird

young blue jay on the porchLast night, as I was heading to my car to go out to dinner, I found a baby bird sleeping on my back patio. He was not cute. In fact, he was a misshapen grey thing with closed lizards' eyes, dozing on the bricks. He must have just fallen out of the nest, because neither I nor my friend noticed him earlier. After looking at him over the picket fence for a couple of minutes, we heard a commotion in the holly tree overhead and saw a couple of agitated blue jays in the branches above.

I didn't think about him until this morning, when the bird was still quite alive and now awake on my back porch. He's smaller than a jay, but nearly the size of a full grown bird. Poor fool probably can't fly. One of his parents swooped by my head as I took his picture. I didn't see him in the backyard this evening after work.

Rushdie on Pakistan and India

Salman Rushdie has an insightful editorial on the tensions between Pakistan and India over Kashmir. You have to register on the New York Times site to read it, but it's worth it.

Cheer Up

Now that you're all depressed, you need something to eat, you need to dance! Head to the 26th Annual Greek Festival in Richmond. I have no idea how they managed to snag that URL.

Roundball and Stompot

For college hoopsters who can't quite get into the NBA, there's still a career in basketball – in Europe. This Times Dispatch article has an interesting look at basketball players pursuing a career in the Old Country. And Stompot? That's Dutch for "soul food".

Wine Alert

My man dropped some mad vine science on me from Breaux Vinyards. The 2000 Lafayette is coming soon to a wine shop near you. The 1999 was one of the finer reds made in the Old Dominion. Look for more tasty tannins, tons of fruit and a full flavor to get the party going in your mouth.

Play a Game

I was digging around on another site and found a link to Orisinal, the flash portfolio of Ferry Halim. The site features a slew of impressive Flash games and animations. Halim does a remarkable job of leveraging Flash's features to make interesting and attractive flash applications. Of course, mine isn't the only link to Orisinal. Still, enjoy.

Home of Cowboys and Italians

So, where are the millions of pounds of bombs made for the war on terrorism? McAlester, Oklahoma. In fact, nearly all of the artillery shells, bombs and other explosives are made there. This Fast Company article does a good job focusing on the McAlester Arsenal and the people who work there!
